TIL Bayer sold HIV and Hepatitis C contaminated blood products which caused up to 10,000 people in the U.S. alone to contract HIV. After they found out the drug was contaminated, they pulled it off the U.S. market and sold it to countries in Asia and Latin America so they could still make money. : todayilearned

I have hemophilia and received one of those bad batches. I got HIV and Hep C when I was 5. The only good news from it was that I’m one of the lucky few that is non-progressive. So I’m stuck at just barely testing positive. I’m now in my late 30s.

I used to go to hemophilia summer camps where easily 10 or so (out of 30) would be dead by the following year. You’d wait around on the first day to see who would show up/be alive. After the first supper of camp, they would announce the former campers that died the previous year.

Also, I’m one of the few who knows how much their life is worth. There was a class action suit against the government and the Drug Companies. I got $150,000.

I have no social life to speak of. I came from a small town. And back when Ryan White was being ostracized I quickly decided not to tell anyone. Not that it mattered, because of the whole Ryan White/hemophilia thing being in the news I got called “Faggot” and whatnot. So none of my friends know. I tried dating, but never did anything sexual to endanger anyone, so I always got dumped for “being a prude”. But hey, I got $150,000…so it is totally worth it /s.” - Top comment. Anonymous
